Family Spirit Celebrating Dads Event Brings Community to the Hideaway 8-16-16

Joseph V. Sowmick - August 16, 2016

Team Observer traveled to the Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park August 9 to join the Nimkee Healthy Start Program at the Family Spirit Celebrating Dads event.  Nimkee Healthy Start Child Nurses Anna Hon and Helen Williams and fellow Public Heath staffer Judy Davis greeted the families as they enjoyed a cookout along with swimming, fishing and paddle boating.

“The morning started out very rainy but by the time our event was starting, the skies were clear, the temperature was nice and warm and the families came. It was a wonderful way to celebrate dads,” Hon said.  “Anishinabe Outreach Language Specialists Isabelle Osawamick and Margaret Flamand from ALRD provided Ojibwe language plinko and we all came together to eat. There’s an old saying the family that eats together stays together.”

Hon gave a “Budgeting For My Family” lesson from the Family Spirit Curriculum and informs there was a lot of interaction throughout the lesson where families discussed ways to save money, make money and how to make a budget you could live by.  On behalf of Nimkee Public Health, a special shout out was offered to the people that made the event a success:

*Helen and Anna for cooking and baking

*Walt the grill master for providing the best dogs and chicken in town

*Patrick from the Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park who made our families so happy , making sure that everyone was safe and making sure the facilities were clean and ready to use for our event.

*To Brandon Schultz from the REACH department who sponsored our paddle boats

*To Sandy Sprague from the Public Relations department who provided some wonderful door prizes

*To Bonnie Sprague from Migizi who donated an overnight stay to the water park, water park passes and a round of golf with a cart.

*To Judy Davis who handled the registration booth with grace and who was helpful in getting the door prizes to their rightful owners.

* To Sue Sowmick for letting us use their pop up tent and table.

Hon also offered a big “miigwetch” to all the dads, granddads, moms, and children who came out to help us celebrate our communities wonderful and great dads!
