SCIT Round Dance Friday night in full swing! 3-11-16

Joseph V. Sowmick - March 14, 2016

In an effort to provide bonus coverage, Team Observer is on site to report the 9th Annual SCIT Round Dance in the Eagles Nest Tribal Gym is in full swing under the Friday night lights, March 11.  Drummers, dancers and vendors are flocking to the nest from all over the U. S. and Canada for one of the most special cultural and traditional events of the year.  Emcee Jermaine Bell came in from the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming and is directing the action.

The Saginaw Chippewa Youth Council is doing a wonderful job on concessions and is ready to serve you along with the many vendors. The Saginaw Chippewa Round Dance has built a reputation for hosting one of the premier Round Dances in the Great Lakes area and Aaron Chivis SCA AB Teacher and Grand Traverse Band, informs Peshawbetown and Mount Pleasant were two of the first round dance venues in the Great Lakes area.

“To my knowledge, they were some of the only ones in Michigan that follow round dance protocol as close as possible to our Cree relatives, from which the round dance comes from,” Chivis said. “I have attended Michigan round dances in Manistee, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Charlevoix, and Dowagiac to name a few. Round dances have a great social aspect to them, no regalia needed; just rocking music and you can literally dance every song if you wish. Many of these newer round dances are more social in nature, letting everyone come and enjoy good music and dance the night away.”

Chivis encourages everyone to come out to join us tonight and to make sure to stay for the main festivities taking place on Saturday, March 12 (doors will open at 3pm)  This year provides another great line up so come out and join in the celebration this weekend … Miigwetch!
