The SCIT Eagles Basketball Appreciation & Awards

The SCIT Eagles Basketball Appreciation & Awards Banquet was truly a heartfelt community event.  All I saw was smiles, hugs, and even a few tears of joy.  The Eagles Nest Tribal Gym was full of love for our youth and how proud we are for all their efforts this year. (-More-)


Basketball Winter League All Star Game Goes O.T.

On March 16, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe (SCIT) Parks & Recreation Men's Basketball Winter League All Star Game went into overtime in a dramatic finish worthy of many basketball clichés and hyperbole. (-More-)


Men's Winter Basketball league Wrap-Up and All-Star Game

The Men’s Winter Basketball League completed its six week schedule and Team Owls went through the conference undefeated at 6-0.  They will be joining Team Chippewa Lanes, Team Eagles, Team Playmakers, Team Hawks and Team Free Agents in a double elimination seeded tournament this weekend at the Eagles Nest Tribal Gym.  The tournament tips off on Saturday, March 10 at noon with Team Eagles vs. Team Free Agents.  Immediately following that contest at 1pm will be Team Playmakers against Team Hawks.  The noon game winner will play Team Owls at 9am on Sunday, March 11 and the 1pm Saturday winner plays Team Chippewa Lanes.  The non-stop action continues until the League Championship game late Sunday afternoon followed by the tournament trophy presentations, including tournament MVP. 

The Men’s Winter League All-Star Game takes place on Friday, March 19 at the Eagles Nest with door prize registration for the public beginning at 5pm.  The event is based after the NBA All-Star Weekend and will feature a Three Point Shootout, Slam Dunk Competition and Agility Skills Contest.  The contests start at 5:30pm with the 40 minute All-Star Game tip off at 6:30pm.  A brief Awards Ceremony will crown League MVP, Points Leader, Assists Leader, Blocks Leader and Steals Leader.

Men's Winter League offers Week Five action

The Feb. 19 action saw Team Chippewa Lanes post a "W" over Team Free Agents 87 - 77. Bear Raphael continued his superb league play by chipping in 35 points and nine assists with Aaron Chivez contributing 29 points in the contest. Team Free Agents were once again led by Tim "Doc" with 22 points.

Team Eagles flew past Team Hawks in the second game 78 - 62 with Henry Wemigwans and Manny scoring 21 and 19 points respectively. John "Pax" Chippewa was the game high scorer for Team Hawks with 35 points.

The nightcap game saw Team Owls extend their league dominance with a decisive win over Team Playmakers 83 - 32. Terrence Isham led a balanced offensive onslaught with 24 point and Jordan Ham adding 18 points and three treys behind the arc.

The two remaining weekends of Sunday night Men's Basketball Winter League action are set for Feb. 19 and Feb. 26. Tip off for league night starts at 6 p.m.

SCIT Parks & Recreation Director Ronnie Ekdahl outlined a plan to the Men's Winter League coaches, players and referees for a Friday, March 16 All Star game.

"Our staff was planning an awards ceremony for the teams, but we thought it would be nice for the fans to see a competitive game featuring the best players in our league," Ekdahl informs. "Just like the NBA All Star Weekend, we are planning a three point contest, slam dunk competition and skills competition for the fans we're looking forward to giving our community another exciting community sporting event at the Nest!"

The six week leagues concludes on Feb. 26 with Team Free Agents against Team Playmakers, Team Owls facing Team Chippewa Lanes and Team Hawks getting a rematch game against Team Eagles. The double elimination league tournament takes place at the Eagles Nest on March 10 and 11 with brackets pending publication on Parks website at www.sagchip.org.
