I am Little River Band Odawa. I am Bear Clan. I was born in Muskegon, MI. I live in Petoskey, MI with my wife Cathy, of 40 years. We have 4 children and 10 grandchildren. My father is James Gibson, Sr., Manistee, MI. My mother was Stella (nee Shalifoe) Gibson-ba, Little River Band Odawa. My maternal grandparents were Solomon Shalifoe-ba, Keewenaw Bay Ojibwe and Rose (nee Bailey) Shalifoe-ba, Grand River Band Odawa and Ojibwe and Saginaw Chippewa.

My teachings began at the age of 12 in the Morning Star Lodge. My teachers were the late James Eagle-ba and Ambrose Thompson-ba. I Sundanced in Montana at the age of 19 and 20. At the age of 24, I moved to Ft. Totten, ND where I continued learning the lodge ways. During that time, I was introduced to the Native American Church, where I am now the Head Roadman.

My teachings have guided me throughout my life and now am passing them onto my children and grandchildren. My path has allowed me to meet and help many great Anishinaabek.
