About the guest speaker

Tom Peters is a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Chippewa. He is married to Karen Kay-Peters and the father of 4 daughters, 13 grandchildren, and 2 great grand-sons, he is originally from Charlevoix, Michigan. He attended Michigan Technological University graduating in Electrical Engineering in 1971. He also attended Lake Superior State University receiving a degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. Tom is an Anishinaabe traditional pipe carrier and is a founding board member of the An-ishinaabemowin Teg Inc. (an international organization dedicated to preserving the An-ishinaabe Language).

Tom is currently the director of engineering at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme Michi-gan, a past board member of the Michigan Indian Child Welfare Agency, founding mem-ber of the Michigan Chapter of AISES Professional Chapter (American Indian Science and Engineering Society). He retired as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer from General Mo-tors where he worked as a project engineer on computerized facility management sys-tems.

In 1999 Tom received the Frank Hugo Memorial Nishnaabemowin Language Award from the Bay Mills Indian Com-munity. He has been a keynote speaker at many conferences and conducted numerous workshops on Anishinaabe Cultural, Language and technology.

A member of the Medicine Lodge Singers (a non-alcohol community pow wow drum), traditional dancer and story teller. He believes in the need for a strong self image through the understanding of Anishinaabe culture and tradi-tions.
