As we welcome the Fall season, it is a good time to remind ourselves, our families, and our Community about simple steps that can help promote health, safety, and wellness throughout the cooler months.
Fall often brings an increase in seasonal respiratory illnesses and other health concerns as people spend more time indoors. Across SHHS, prevention, education, early recognition, and access to appropriate care remain important parts of supporting a healthy Community.
Fall Health & Prevention Reminders
Respiratory Illness Prevention
Colds, influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses may increase during the fall and winter. Encourage good hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick when appropriate, and following current public health and clinical guidance.
Hand Hygiene
Frequent handwashing with soap and water remains one of the simplest ways to help reduce the spread of many infections. Hand sanitizer may also be used when soap and water are not readily available.
Chronic Disease Management
Cooler weather should not interrupt routine healthcare. Encourage patients and Community members to continue medications as prescribed, attend scheduled appointments, and follow their individualized care plans.
Mental & Behavioral Wellness
Seasonal changes, shorter daylight hours, stress, and social isolation can affect emotional well-being. Let us continue to promote connection, early support, and awareness of available Behavioral Health resources.
Elder Wellness
Please continue to check on our Elders, particularly as temperatures begin to fall. Fall is a good time to review medication needs, transportation, home safety, nutrition, and preparations for colder weather.
Healthy Nutrition & Physical Activity
Seasonal changes provide an opportunity to encourage nutritious foods, regular physical activity appropriate to each person's abilities, adequate hydration, and healthy sleep routines.
Environmental Health & Home Safety
As heating systems begin to be used again, households should check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries as needed, and follow safe heating practices.
Fall & Injury Prevention
Wet leaves, earlier darkness, changing weather, and eventually frost can increase the risk of slips, falls, and driving-related incidents. Awareness and preparation can help reduce preventable injuries.
Early Care When Needed
Encourage individuals to contact their healthcare provider when symptoms are concerning, persistent, or worsening, and to seek emergency medical care when appropriate.
Wishing everyone a healthy, safe, and wonderful Fall season!
