Michigan Indian Family Olympics: Cancellation 7/17/26
Today, Thursday, July 16, 2026 our teams met to assess the situation regarding the upcoming Michigan Indian Family Olympics scheduled for tomorrow, July 17, 2026. Recognizing the significance of this event, which is eagerly anticipated by many, we have taken into account the current air quality conditions and the guidance provided by our health professionals. After careful consideration, it has been determined that this year’s event will be canceled to prioritize the health and safety of all participants and attendees.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this decision may cause, but it is important that we prioritize the well-being of our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable during this time. We kindly ask for your assistance in sharing this message to ensure that everyone is informed.
Additionally, we have made resources available to support those in need, and we encourage everyone to take care of one another as we navigate these challenging circumstances together. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued a Statewide Air Quality Alert for today, July 16 and tomorrow, July 17 due to wildfire smoke. Air quality is expected to range from Very Unhealthy to Hazardous in many areas.
For your health and safety, please consider the following:
- Avoid or postpone outdoor activities whenever possible.
- Keep windows and doors closed to help maintain cleaner indoor air.
- If you must be outdoors, limit your time outside and consider wearing a NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator if available.
- Individuals with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, young children, and pregnant individuals should take extra precautions and remain indoors whenever possible.
- Seek medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, chest pain, dizziness, or worsening of an existing medical condition.
Please take care of yourselves, your families, and one another during this period of poor air quality. If you have outdoor plans, consider moving them indoors until conditions improve.
