For Immediate Release - May 12, 2008

Mt. Pleasant, Michigan    The Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways, in conjunction with the Great Lakes Logging and Indian Culture Museum of Saginaw, Michigan, will host an exhibition entitled Moccasins of the Great Lakes Anishinabek on Saturday, May 31, 2008 from 10am-3pm.

Special Guest Mike Slasinski, curator for the Great Lakes Logging and Indian Culture Museum, will present and discuss vintage moccasins of the Cree, Ho-Chunk, Iroquois, Menominee, Mi'Kmaq, Odawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi and other Great Lakes Tribes.  William Johnson, curator for the Ziibiwing Center, will join Mr. Slasinski to offer his expertise on the origins, materials, and superior craftsmanship of these remarkable works of art.

Constructed out of many types of material and often decorated with beadwork, cloth, quillwork and silk ribbon, these moccasins are rare and unique cultural necessities. Over 40 pairs will be exhibited at this special event - many of which have never been put on display for a general audience.  This event is free and open to the public.  Individuals are encouraged to bring moccasins from their own collections for discussion and viewing.  For more information contact William Johnson at (989) 775-4730.
