Returning To The Earth Ceremony

Thursday, November 4, 2010 - Walking the ancestors home

Central Michigan University's Museum of Cultural and Natural History is returning the remains of 144 Saginaw Chippewa tribal ancestors and associated funerary objects to the tribe for proper burial.

This day, November 4, 2010, witnesses a walk from Central Michigan University to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Nibokaan Ancestral Cemetery. A ceremony for the ancestors and their associated funerary objects, and a spirit feast will follow this return.


Friday, November 5, 2010 - Return to the Earth

On this day 144 ancestors' remains were welcomed home after being widely scattered from the earth on which they lived, and in which they now have their final rest. The 22 minute video above offers a rough sketch of this historic honoring of their return. A more polished version will be completed over the coming weeks.
