For Immediate Release - June 25, 2008

Mt. Pleasant, Michigan    The Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways is presenting a glimpse into the history, significance, and styles of cultural dance called American Indian Dance - Awaken Your Spirit every Saturday in July. The intimacy of this program will provide an opportunity for audience interaction with the dancers.

On Saturday, July 5, 2008 the Men's & Women's Traditional Dance will be featured during performances at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm. The Traditional Dance is the oldest style of dance. Saturday, July 12, 2008 will highlight the Men's Grass Dance and Women's Jingle Dress Dance at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.  Long ago, men's grass dancers were responsible for preparing a ceremonial clearing through dance. The women's jingle dress was born from a young Ojibwe woman's dream to heal her people. Men's Fancy Feather Dance and Women's Fancy Shawl will take the spotlight on Saturday, July 19 at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.  The Fancy Dancers will amaze you with their high jumps, spins and fancy footwork.  The final program commences on Saturday, July 26, 2008 with Social & Hoop Dancing at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.  Social Dances bring together people from all walks of life.  The Hoop Dance creates and brings to life unique symbols and designs of nature, such as flowers, trees, animals, and birds.  This style of dance visually shows our connection with the earth and all living things.  These events are free and open to the public.  For more information - contact Yvette Pitawanakwat at
