Michigan Civil Rights Commission, Michigan Department of Civil Rights to Meet, Host Public Forum in Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant/Isabella County visit celebrates the Department’s 50th anniversary

Lansing-The Michigan Civil Rights Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights will visit Mt. Pleasant on Monday, March 24 for a series of meetings with community members and public events. The Mt. Pleasant visit is one stop on MDCR’s 50th anniversary celebration tour of 50 Michigan communities.

As part of the day-long visit, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission will hold its regular business meeting at 1 pm at the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways, 6650 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant 48858. At the meeting, Commissioners will hear from members of the Isabella County Human Rights Commission, who will report the findings of a microaggression study conducted during the past year that examined the nature and extent of acts of discrimination against Native Americans in Isabella County. Individuals who wish to address the Commission on civil rights issues can speak during the public comment period at the end of the meeting.

Prior to the Commission meeting, Commissioners and MDCR staff will meet with local law enforcement officials, tour the Ziibiwing Museum, and enjoy a traditional luncheon.

From 4 pm to 6 pm, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights will host a community forum on civil rights issues in the community and nation, also at the Ziibiwing Center. The public is encouraged to attend both the Commission meeting and the community forum and contribute to the discussion.

The meeting location is accessible and free parking is available onsite. If you want to attend and need accommodations to do so, please contact Shawn Sanford at 517-373-8787.
