Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College will host an open house on April 20 with the theme being "Healthy Lifestyles Leadership Experience."

Current students and potential students alike will have the opportunity to sign up for Fall 2006 classes as well as participate in games and take home souvenirs with the college logo-Frisbees, pens, duffle bags, travel wallets, jump ropes, water bottles, and tee-shirts.

One of the games to be played will be a scavenger hunt organized by the student council. In addition to the registrar's table, the student council, the self-study coordinator, the assessment coordinator, and the SCTC chapter of the American Indian Business Leaders will host tables and be able to answer any questions about their activities at the college.

Among the fliers to be handed out will be one for the Assessment Fair. Last semester, our Assessment Fair was only a week long, but it was so successful that this term it will run during the last two weeks of class, from April 24 to April 26 and then again from May 1 to May 5.

Assessment is important to the college in many ways. First and foremost, assessment helps us to make sure our students our learning the right things in their classes, and that we are teaching in such a way that we reach all students.

Assessment also guides our program review. First we assess the learning outcomes for our students, then we examine learning outcome strategies for each degree program we have; assessment allows us to make the changes to ensure that each student is learning what is required for that degree. This kind of feedback is necessary to the success of our programs as well as the success of our graduates.

Assessment is on-going; it is not just something we do when we prepare a self-study for accreditation. The self-study has initiated some forms of assessment that were previously lacking like the Assessment Fair.

We will continue to build on our current success with more creative and innovative ideas in the future. Our faculty have been engaged in assessment workshops for the past three years and we can truly say that assessment is an institutional priority at SCTC.
