District 1 Saginaw Chippewa Tribal member Delores K. Jackson topped 21 other candidates in a Feb. 10 special election.

Jackson, 49, notched 52 votes-six more than second-place finisher Brian Chippeway with 46. Out of the 703 registered voters, 324 or 46 percent, participated in the election.

"I will always act with the best interest of the Tribe first and foremost," she stated in the Nov. 1 edition of the Tribal Observer. She was previously elected to Tribal Council during a Jan. 7 special election, but failed in her reelection bid during the Nov. 4 general election.

"I firmly believe the interest of the Tribe as a whole must come first and foremost," she added. "I have always put the best interest of the Tribe above my own. I want to represent the members who elect me. I believe we must protect our future, our heritage, provide our people with knowledge of our history, all working together to help shape our future while continually providing growth of our resources and security."

The rest of the special election vote is as follows:

Robert Pego Sr., 40; David G. Perez, 35; Timothy J. Davis, 22; Delmar J. Jackson Sr., 20; Clinton R. Pelcher Jr., 14; Lindy M. Hunt, 11; Eliza A. Owl, 10; Carol A. Shanks, 9; Eleanor J. Ebright, 8; Sharon M. Avery, Elizabeth K. Bennett and Dolly A. Rueckert Sr., 7 each; Amanda George-Dye and Gail George, 6 each; Craig Graveratte and Rachel M. Sharp, 5 each; Consuelo J. Gonzalez, Angel M. Jackson, Mark J. Vasquez Sr., 4 each; and Ronald John Jackson, 2.

The special election took place due to the Dec. 5 resignation of Gerald Slater. His resignation came only three days after being sworn into office for reasons revolving around personnel.

A March 2 swearing-in ceremony is planned.
