Ten-year-old Adam Niezgoda was excited about the field trip the Niibing Program participants were about to embark on July 13.

"This is going to be my best field trip," he said of the journey to the Bay City Planetarium. "I like space."

The planetarium is one of several endeavors coordinated through the annual summer program for Native youth ages 6-14. A structured combination of recreation and education helps the youth stay active during the summer so their social skills do not stagnate.

"It's our way of giving the kids a positive alternative during summer vacation," stated K-12 Coordinator Len Klakulak. "It's something for them to do in the summer. There are a lot of recreational and fun activities planned and we slip in education when they are not looking."

This is the sixth year of the popular program, which began on June 28 and concludes July 29. Klakulak said 114 youth are taking part in Niibing this year. It usually takes place during the week from 1 to 4 p.m., but varies in time when there are special trips or activities.

"The boys look forward to the program," said Jean Flamand of her sons Kaine and Alden. "They like going to the different places the field trips take them."

Klakulak said two of the more popular trips include the Lansing Lugnuts game and to Michigan's Adventures.

"I start getting questions around Christmas about the Michigan's Adventures trip," joked Klakulak.

Seven-year-old Miino Pelcher said she liked going to East Lansing Aquatics on July 8.

"I liked going swimming at the water park," she said.

The educational elements the program offered are also trendy with the youth.

"Dr. Slime and the living science presentations are also a big hit," explained Klakulak. "They are both excellent opportunities for the youth to learn."

For Adam, an Ojibwe language program also got his attention.

"I liked playing bingo while learning," he said. This is the second year he has participated in the Niibing Program. "Plus I get to see all my friends."
