An event to unite community women and promote healthy lifestyles in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is planned for Oct. 26.

The Ninth Annual Feather Link Tea will take place at the Soaring Eagle Resort from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The activity-which may be especially healing for cancer survivors, loved ones of cancer victims and caretakers for those fighting the disease-is open to all community members and employees.

"This is a great time to enjoy the company of other women and celebrate the beauty of life," said Nimkee Memorial Wellness Center Women's Health/BCCCP Assistant Judy Davis. "Our guest speakers will discuss ways to nurture the body-spiritually, mentally and physically."

Because Native American woman are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer, participation in early detection measures are mandatory to improve the odds, according to Tina McPhall, Nimkee Memorial Wellness Center Women's Health/BCCCP coordinator.

"Conducting monthly breast exams, getting a baseline mammogram and yearly pap smears are all very important," explained McPhall. "Grant funding is available here at Nimkee for women without insurance who need a baseline or yearly exam."

A baseline mammogram is usually conducted in women around the age of 40, according to Davis. She added that earlier screenings can be done for those who have been adopted or are uncertain of family history due to lack of testing.
