Message from the President

As President of Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College, I would like to welcome you to our small but growing college community.

Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College, a tribally-controlled college, is defined by its mission. We are “an open and inclusive institution” and seek to “provide education in a caring, student-focused, and intellectually stimulating environment.” Whether you are a new or continuing student, you will find that each faculty member, staff person, and administrator will make you feel welcome to our community. Students come first at Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College. In support of our mission, SCTC utilizes small class-size and an individualized approach to instruction. Learning is our central mission and we focus all our efforts on you as the learner.

Great things are happening at Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College. Students are registering for classes in record numbers. In the past year, SCTC established eligibility to offer Federal Student Financial aid, established eligibility to receive financial assistance under the Tribally Controlled College and University Assistance Act, received our first grant focusing on diabetes prevention and awareness, and, significantly, achieved Land Grant status and thus became the 32nd “1994 Land Grant Institution” with other tribal colleges and universities. Two new grant programs will commence in fall of 2004: a National Science Foundation project to improve the science, math, and technology curriculum; and a U.S. Department of Agriculture project that focuses on Environmental Science curriculum development. Since gaining Initial Candidacy in 2003, our biggest challenge, and potentially greatest achievement, will be attaining Initial Accreditation. We have working energetically on a comprehensive self-study over the past year in preparation for an evaluation site visit in 2005.

We are constantly making improvements to the college. Recently added was an additional classroom building, which includes a student lounge and Learning Resource Center. Technology in classrooms is being upgraded to enhance teaching. We hope to add more staff and faculty during the academic year to strengthen student support services and instruction. Maintaining the quality of instruction is an ongoing goal to which we are committed.

Again, welcome to Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College. I hope your learning experience is rewarding and fully meets your expectations.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hamley, Ed.D.
President
