Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast.
The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.

Breast cancer mortality varies according to where Native American women live. Women who live in
Alaska and the Southern Plains have the highest mortality rates and women who live in the
Southwest have the lowest mortality rates (ww5.komen.org)
Breast cancer screening is important for all Native American women. Native American women and
white women have about the same rates of breast cancer screening. Among women ages 40 and
older, 69 percent of Natve American women and 67 percent of white women had a mammogram in the
past two years (ww5.komen.org)
The American Cancer Society's estmates for breast cancer in the United States for 2015 are:
- About 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 60,290 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed
(CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
- About 40,290 women will die from breast cancer
